Check if an image is AI generated
Most image detectors guess from pixels. We read the file first, because a signed credential or an embedded generation record is proof, and a pixel guess is not.
What we read out of the file
C2PA Content Credentials
A cryptographically signed manifest recording which tool made the image and how it was edited since. Adopted by OpenAI, Adobe, Microsoft, Leica and Sony. When it is present, it is the strongest evidence that exists.
IPTC Digital Source Type
A standard metadata field where a tool declares trainedAlgorithmicMedia — a direct statement that the image came out of a generative model.
PNG generation parameters
Stable Diffusion interfaces, ComfyUI and InvokeAI write the prompt, seed, sampler and model straight into PNG text chunks. People rarely know it is there.
EXIF capture data
Camera make, model, lens and capture time. Its presence points toward a real device; a generator name in the Software field points the other way.
The limit you need to know about
Provenance evidence is one-directional. Finding it tells you something definite. Not finding it tells you almost nothing, because Instagram, X, Facebook, WhatsApp and most messaging apps strip metadata on upload as a matter of course. A screenshot destroys all of it too.
So if you saved an image from social media and we report no evidence, that is the expected result — for real photographs and generated images alike. Ask for the original file if you need an answer.
